Storytelling Today Limited is a new venture set up by international storyteller Graham Langley and Storytelling Café National Tours Administrator Steve Wright. It is based in Birmingham but with storytellers in all parts of the West and East Midlands and access to many others throughout the United Kingdon and Eire.

We offer high quality storytellers of all types for performances, workshops and projects for children and/or adults. Many of them are nationally recognised storytellers and cover a vast range of story themes – myths & legends, dramatic & comic, traditional British stories, Indian, African, Greek, South American and more.

Why use a storyteller?

The pleasure derived from listening to a story is as old as humanity itself. The story, listener and teller all form part of the experience. Stories help us to make sense of the world, to understand ourselves and our emotions. Many ancient stories which survive to this day have one thing in common; they are tales of morality. They remind us of our history, of our heritage, and carry the same messages of integrity, love and friendship that are still relevant today.

Our storytellers are highly experienced and can choose or adapt tales to suit any venue – indoors or out. The stories can be traditional or contemporary to suit the occasion.

Storytelling as entertainment

Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of entertainment and is at the root of all literature and drama. We think in stories, make sense of our world in stories, tell our family and friends stories of what we remember and retell.

Good storytelling can be powerful, transporting, and magical, and is best in live performance, whether that is on a stage or * friends round a table.

Performance storytelling has undergone a world revival. It is an oral tradition which has carried its magical message across generations since time immemorial.

Storytelling as education

Storytelling is how we share experience, understand each other, and create community. Every conversation is full of personal anecdote; every effort to explain shared customs and values needs a tale; every bit of wisdom is best expressed by a story. The very way our minds think is the essence of story. So to master powerful and effective communication, to engage people and ensure they remember facts, or to break down barriers of isolation within or between groups, telling stories in some form is essential.

We use stories to pass on accumulated wisdom, beliefs, and values. Through stories we explain how things are, why they are, and our role and purpose. Stories are the building blocks of knowledge, the foundation of memory and learning. Stories link past, present, and future and teach us to anticipate the possible consequences of our actions.
