Dear Party Pop, I had the most fun at a wedding I went to a couple of years ago. One of my fraternity brother’s was taking the plunge. He was the fraternity funny guy so I figured his wedding would be anything but straight laced. The ceremony wasn’t too off the mark. There were some off the cuff comments during the vow exchange that got the guests laughing and a particularly amusing rabbi kept Jeff in his place. But that was it. I’m sure Jeff’s bride wouldn’t have been too happy if there had been anything too crazy. The reception started like any other, but then things got amusing. In college we used to make fun of Jeff because he would watch old 80’s shows late at night. He especially liked Columbo. So unbeknownst to him, his parents had a wedding surprise. Just after dinner was served and before the band started playing, a short, loud man barged into the reception. He was shouting Jeff’s name and when we all turned to look saw it was a man in a tan trench coat with curly dark hair. It was a Columbo impersonator. For the next half hour Columbo did a routine that included not only Jeff and his wife, but other family and friends. And it was hysterical. He got into everybody’s business with “just one more question” and made sure to bring up many embarrassing facts from Jeff’s life. The actor played Columbo very convincingly and Jeff was really pleased with the surprise. Two years later we are still talking about Jeff’s wedding and laughing over the events that took place at the reception. And on Jeff’s mantle isn’t a picture of he and his bride, but one of the happy couple with Columbo in the middle. Sincerely, Matt Rosenbloom
