| Dear Party Pop,
I have a funny story to share with you about my friend’s wedding day. It proves that on the big day, mother’s of the bride will do anything to make sure the day runs smoothly.
The wedding was a first for me in that my friend and her sister were both getting married. It was a double wedding. Double the wedding day jitters, double the anxiety, double the stress. My friend, Pam, and her sister are really close and it just worked out great that they met the perfect guys and got engaged around the same time. I know they were thrilled to wed at the same time, but it put a lot of pressure on their mom. She wanted everything to be perfect but with two brides to think about, let’s just say something was bound to happen.
The wedding took place in a hotel and was to start at 5 o’clock. Pam and her sister had stayed over the night before to get a good night’s sleep (if that’s possible) and spend the morning and afternoon getting ready for the ceremony. I was told their mom, Janet, got very little sleep that night. She was too consumed with details, last minute seating adjustments and nerves to get any shut-eye. This surprised me a little because she was always the calm, cool mom that we loved to hang out with. She always made everything fun and nice, spending extra money to give us perks we couldn’t always afford. And Janet wanted this wedding day to be the perfect affair.
My husband and I arrived early at the hotel to meet some friends we hadn’t seen in a while for lunch. There were lots of out of town college friends flying in for this occasion and we wanted to take advantage of seeing them. Even though we didn’t live far away, we made a reservation to stay at the hotel that evening so that we could party and hang out with all the out-of-towners. They were also staying at the hotel so we were really excited about the weekend.
Right after the valet drove away to park our car, Janet pulled up in her well kept older Mercedes Benz. She jumped out of the car and slammed the door. Seeing me, she ran to give me a quick hug and quickly returned to her car to open the back door. It was locked so she rushed around to the driver’s door. It was locked also. And the engine was running! It wouldn’t have been that big of a deal except for she had two bridesmaid dresses in the back seat that needed to be delivered to the bridal suite pronto.
Well you can imagine what kind of words came out of Janet’s mouth as she realized what she’d done. She was in such hurry and didn’t care about anything else that when she asked the valet if he had a hammer I didn’t try and stop her. She was on a mission and nothing was going to stop her. The valet didn’t have a hammer on him but he did have a large flashlight near by. He handed it to Janet and she swung full steam at the side window. It shattered and she reached her hand into the car to unlock the door. She opened the door, grabbed the dresses shaking them off to rid any glass, and told the valet she didn’t have time to worry about it now and to just park the car.
In a whirlwind she was inside the hotel and making her way to deliver the dresses. My husband and I couldn’t believe what we had just witnessed. Actually, I could. That’s how Janet operates. Her daughters come first, no matter what.
We shared our arrival story with our friends at lunch and we all had a good laugh. It was revealed that several of us had mother of the bride stories to share. We all reveled in the fact that our mom’s would do anything for us and Janet certainly was the same way.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Tate
