What a Girl Really Wants |
My Bat Mitzvah planning was going nowhere! Between the quarrels concerning the event, I desperately attempted to get one message through to my parents; this was my day, not theirs!
I think my attempt failed miserably because my parents continued to put their 2 cents in, actually I think it was more like a dollar. "We want it this way", "We don't want it rowdy", "and we want to invite all of our friends and co-workers". During their rants and raves I could only propose one more idea, "Let's turn that 'W' upside down and make it about me!"
I wanted a party that my friends, especially the boys, would remember for the rest of their lives. I wanted Rabbi Cohen to go home to his family exhausted from the vigorous dancing. I wanted my moment of fame. Yeah, yeah, I know what you are thinking…..I got my moment of fame as I was standing before the audience and reading "Deuteronomy", but in all truth I could not wait to finish and let the party begin!
The most important ingredient to a great Bat Mitzvah party is of course a great Bat Mitzvah D.J. My parents seemed to think disc jockeys were for house parties filled with delinquents but I assured her that they weren't. My mom was fixed on the idea of having a band perform "oldies but goodies" throughout the night. I obviously opposed because at a previous Bat Mitzvah I attended everyone seemed to coincidently run off to the bathroom at the same time; when the band members struck up the cords for "Blue Moon". Live music is great, don't get me wrong, but my Bat Mitzvah called for something else, something more up to date.
Think about it, what would a Bat Mitzvah be without Bat Mitzvah music? I can just see it now……my friends, bored out of their minds, twiddling their thumbs on the "dance floor". What a night, right? Wrong! Music is what the party is all about. The Bat Mitzvah Disc Jockey starts out with some quick paced, shake your booty kind of songs. As the night progresses he throws some slow melodies in there so the hormone driven boys and girls can attempt some form of romantic connection, interrupted immediately when the little guy steps on the ladies foot.
Not only are Disc Jockeys cool, affordable and up to date with the latest songs but 99.9% of the time they are really cute! Have you ever noticed how the flirtatious girls always seem to make a circle around the D.J.'s turntables and other equipment? Once they catch a glimpse of the man behind the music, not only are they totally crushing on him but it is a guarantee that they won't leave the Bat Mitzvah to socialize elsewhere. Having a Disc Jockey is a great idea if your friends only came for the free food and foolish boys….but does that really make them your friends? Sorry, my mind wandered for a second, let me get back on track and move on.
Bat Mitzvah photographers are essential to any Bat Mitzvah. I certainly want photographs to remember the day I made my transformation into womanhood. I also would not mind pictures of all the people who chatted up a storm in my service so I can have a little discussion with them later.
"Say cheese". No thanks, I'll pass. If a Bat Mitzvah photographer says that then he really doesn't have a clue. If I am having a Bat Mitzvah then there is a good chance that I keep kosher and if that's the case I don't eat cheese since I prefer it with meat anyways.
I'll cut the humor and be honest. I want a professional photographer who has experience with the Bat Mitzvah environment. I want him to keep his space and not be too nosey but I want him to capture it all. It may sound like a contradiction but it makes sense. It is the worst when a photographer sneaks up on you, gets in way too close and blinds you momentarily just for a "Kodak moment." The best photographs I have seen were when the person was dancing, laughing, talking to family or just being themselves, the more natural and raw, the better.
The photographer is like the artist and we are his canvas, he can portray us in any which way he chooses .By choosing an experienced photographer we have a better chance of seeing ourselves the way we would like.
I actually think my parents agree with me on this subject. They too want high- quality photographs done by a high-quality photographer and luckily there are plenty of them out there for us to choose from.
As the time draws nearer to my Bat Mitzvah I am starting to believe that everything is going to be just fine, as long as we have awesome Bat Mitzvah music and an even greater Bat Mitzvah Photographer.
