Etiquette prohibits you from directly asking your guests or attendees for money. You may, however, have a family member or close friend tell your guests or attendees in an informal manner that a monetary gift would be appreciated by the bride and groom.
In most of indian weddings it is stated at the bottom of the invitation, "no boxed gitts please". Very accepted and common in that community as well as in chinese weddings, where they state "the bride and groom are not registered and will be following chinese tradition of gifting red envelopes". Red envelopes is what's traditionally use to put money in.
Most things we need we've already got,
And in our home we can't fit a lot!
A gift of money is asked of you
And once we've replaced the old with the new,
We can look back and say it was thanks to you!
