Re: Native American Wedding
I have seen many sites on the internet regarding weddings, but I found there are not too many sites that specialize in Native American theme. I have added a Native twist to it different items I seen on wedding sites. What type of suggestions were you (Susan) looking for? (cake toppers, reception, attire, etc.)

Re: Native American Wedding
I think you would have know the tribal affiliation. Asking about a "native american" wedding would be like asking about a "caucasian" wedding or an "asian" wedding.

Re: Native American Wedding
I think that a Native American wedding is a great idea, when I renew my vows with my husband I'm going to have a traditional Native American wedding.

Re: Native American Wedding
Ok...
I found this site by looking for native american wedding dresses and I can't seem to find the original letter written that comments are being addressed to and I would like to read it as my husband and children are Sioux, Chawctaw- (sorry I think I've misspelled that), and Navaho. Can anyone direct me?

Re: Native American Wedding
Aho! Blessings to all who so positively responded. I have attended Native American weddings including a Muskogee wedding and am performing a Cherokee wedding in two weeks. It is a misnomer to say Cherokee or Muskogee or Sioux wedding. Native American Spirituality is all embracing as Spirit is. Whatever you design in your tradition will be blessed. I find the wrapping of the blanket to be the most meaningful part of the ceremony.

Blessings to you! Would you mind describing the blanket-wrapping ritual, including the symbolism, history, and possibly even the wording? I am an interfaith/intercultural wedding minister, and although I have yet to have a related request, I would like to be able to offer this kind of thing, or at least know more about it.

I am of Native American (1/8 Sioux) descent as well, and if you could offer some advice on where to look for cultural and historical information on Native American life and culture (especially as it pertains to ritual, spirituality, and marriage), I would appreciate it very much. Thank you so much for your time!

Re: Native American Wedding
Aho Natalie: The couple completes their vows and other chosen sacraments in consultation with medicine man and when ready to be "pronounced" acknowledged as man and woman medicine man wraps couple in a special blanket and completely covers them while praying.....they may have brought two blankets and then wrapped in one as they become one with spirit. Feel free to email me. Watahela@earthlink.net

Anyway, I make custom designed SCRAPBOOK MEMORY ALBUMS with your wedding photos in mind, momentos, heirlooms etc.

Re: Native American Wedding
I am going to a native american wedding in July 2006. I can't find any suggestions for what to give to the couple for a wedding gift. Although I am not native american I want to fully respect the spiritual meanings and traditions.

Re: Native American Wedding
WOW, I am getting married too and don't know a thing about the rituals of a Native American wedding. I am with you and I need all the help I can get. We have the Teepee and the Pow Wow is coming to us. Isn't that great. I am an old Lady and this is my best and last marriage. Have you tried Native American Postees? They have lovely poems and scenes. The more I learn, I will pass it on. Walk in Honor, Peace and Love.

I am also looking for websites for traditional dresses, my wedding theme is "Country", but I would like to use my traditional jews for brides maids, best men, and bride/groom. I am currently looking for a cake topper that is native american country. Anyone?

Re: Native American Wedding
Hello,
We are having a Dene wedding up in Canada. I researched my dress and am having it fashioned after an 18th century Aboriginal dress that I
Saw in the museum. We are making our own moccasins. We are having a blanket ceremony with 2 elders. We are having Dene drummers from Northern Canada come to play at the ceremony. It is a non-alcoholic wedding. We are having traditional food for the luncheon reception: moose roast, roasted squash with walnuts, wild rice, field greens and herbed bannock with nut butter. For dessert we have gourmet individual cheesecakes served with fresh berries. My sister made my garter - it is decorated with seed beads in my wedding colours and tiny dragonfly charms. We are making tipis for the table decorations - we are making them out of canvas and decorating them ourselves. Also we are making canoes with special natural looking paper for the tables. We are having tealights on the tables, and the favors are the tealight holders with dragonfly gold embossed sticker on them. Our ceremony is a blanket ceremony and then we have a Unitarian minister doing the legal bit. I sing in the Unitarian choir, so the choir has agreed to sing at my wedding.
We are then having a dance from 4-6.
Did I mention our ceremony is at a tipi campsite and we are having the Dene drummers come in the evening to build a bonfire. We will be having stew and bannock for supper and a casual campsite gethering and Dene dance. And thats it. My sisters are making the wedding cake. Dragonflies are the theme of our Dene wedding and so the cake will have flowers and a couple of jewelled dragonfly pins.
My bridesmaids are wearing a simple dress made from linen - tailored but flowing. The groomsmen are all wearing shirts that are Dene shirts with fringing on them. I will be carrying a natural bouquet. It was very hard to find anything that was Native in terms of weddings. So we decided to make our own traditions - since we are Dene, we figure these are now new Dene traditions! Good luck with your wedding.
