Bridemaids Dresses

I'm having a fall wedding, and I'm considering letting all of my bridesmaids pick their own dresses. I want them to be in the burgundy to red to burnt orange color scheme, and I think having a bunch of dresses in a variety of styles and colors might look cool. I'm having 5 or 6 bridesmaids.

Has anyone recently done this? Or has anyone heard if this turns our well, or is generally a disaster?
