I've been browsing various web sites about sweet sixteen party themes and found a great idea. A Dirty Dancing - Havana Nights theme. It's my daughter's favorite movie. So from browsing the sites I've come up with a few ideas.
Some of the ideas I have already are, I'm going to buy a vintage cuban postcard, scan it and print out on card stock and those will be the invitations.
I found miniature silk areca plants (12") and will probably use those as the centerpieces. I will be giving out chocolate cigars. I may have a set of bongos on each table, not sure yet. I may do something with the straw hats, maracas and mojito glasses, just not sure what yet. I want to buy travel posters (about four) and have them on easels around the room.
The tables will have city names instead of table numbers and I will scan a passport and those will be the seating cards. In other words, instead of, Tracy you are seated at table #3, it will look like a passport and say something like, Tracy Customs has cleared you, please proceed to Havana, and her table will have a big Havana sign on it.
My husband and I are also taking latin ballroom dancing so we might (if we are good enough) have a spotlight dance.
As everyone is coming in and being greeted, etc., we will have the DJ play the soundtrack from Havana Nights.
Here's my main question (there is a question in here somewhere).....I do want to have a balloon arch and balloons on the table. With all of the above decorations, what colors do you think the balloons should be. I guess I could say I'm going for a Havana nightclub type of theme so I was thinking black and red. (Also, if you've seen the move....the club they went to, La Rosa Negra, was all black and red).
If any of you have seen the movie, do you have any input? What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions? Any other colors? Nothing above is set in stone. I still have months to plan the party. Thanks for any help or suggestions you might have.

I just decorated a birthday party that was hollywood themed and they used the colors black silver gold, and red. Those colors look great together. I saw the movie and the decor you've choosen so far sounds good as far as the balloons go the black and red would be good but what color did you choose for the table covers. Maybe you can make the table covers red and go with black and silver balloons. Hi Marlo, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure yet if I want to go with black or red table cloths. Another Idea I had was red votive cups with candles at each place setting with a black silk rose (get it, La Rosa Negra) to give it a nightclub feel. Another thought I had was either a black table cloth with a red unfolded napkin in the middle to offset the color, or the other way around. Just not sure yet. With that said, I was thinking about adding gold balloons to the red and black mix, but I'm not sure about the silver. What do you think?
Well, at the hollywood party we decorated all four of those colors look fabulous together. And the other ideas sound good too. There is just so much you can so do with a good theme like this.
I would like to know where did you find all of the ideas for the havana night party theme, like the passport . Can you help on this i am doing my niece's party and i ve been searching for ideas.
I am also having a havana nights theme party. We're having it on a yacht. As the guests arrive we're going to have steel drum players (timbales) playing so guests can check in and come out and listen to the sounds of the carribean. Also, we're having a cigar roller, palm trees inside and out, mojito bar, still in the planning stages.
